Winter is upon us again (depending on when you are reading this...it's all relative I guess) and it's that time of year it seems that
everyone starts getting that dreaded winter cold/flu bug that seems to hit every year despite our best efforts, flu shots, washing our hands, you
name it. Avoiding colds and flu during the winter season can be challenging, but there are some steps you can take to help lessen the risk of becoming ill.
Eat Well
This should be something you should do throughout the whole year, but it is of particular importance during the winter season. Getting at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day along with two servings of milk or yogurt and whole grains each day will help keep your body healthy and well balanced.
Vitamins and Antioxidants
Taking a multi-vitamin each day is an easy and vital step in maintaining a healthy body and immune system. You might also consider taking additional antioxidants such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Zinc as these are important supplements that are helpful in supporting a healthy immune system.
Wash your hands
Washing your hands frequently with hot soapy water will help eliminate the germs and bacteria you come in contact with. You should also carry around with you a bottle of Purell hand sanitizer and apply often and especially after coming in contact with door handles, railings and even money.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Maintaining a consistent habit of getting a full nights rest will help ensure your body is capable of fighting off any illness you may encounter. Going to bed at the same time each night will also help you to maintain a consistent sleep schedule. If you have trouble relaxing and going to sleep, consider adding habits such as a warm bath, reading or a hot cup of decaffeinated tea before bed.
Get a flu shot
Getting a flu shot can help ward off any potential flu viruses you come in contact with. Flu shots are generally widely available and you can get one at your doctor’s office and some pharmacies and grocery chains.
Saline Nasal Spray
Using a saline nasal spray at least twice daily will help keep your nasal membranes moist. This is extremely important as your nasal membranes help your body eliminate bacteria and viruses that you come in contact with. And if you do become sick, you should frequently spray the solution into your nose so that there is adequate moisture to help flush out the bugs in your system.
Best of luck this winter, and each winter in the future in warding off those nasty bugs. Hopefully at least a few of you reading this will benefit from my suggestions and save yourself the agony of going through what many people go through every winter season.
