Nothing goes quite so well with your favorite t.v. show or a game like
some chips and a cold brewski, does it? For many of us, it is almost second
nature to snack while watching television or just before we go to bed. And
honestly, it is perfectly understandable because it can be almost impossible
to fall asleep when our stomachs are growling at us. However justified and
enjoyable late night snacking may be, the truth remains that doing so will
positively destroy your weight loss goals and waste all of the effort you
have already put into the process of getting into shape. Here are some ideas
to help you beat the late night snacking demon and put your weight loss
program back on track.
Drink a Protein Shake
Late night snacking usually happens for one of two reasons: either it is
simply habit or we are actually hungry. Now if your stomach is truly running
on empty then you are going to have to put something in it. Stop those late
night snacking urges with a protein shake instead of the things you usually
eat. Not only will this curb the hunger pangs causing the late night
snacking but it will also help repair muscles and improve both muscle tone
and your metabolism.
Eat More During the Day
Late night snacking will not be a problem for you when eating the 5-6
smaller meals you are supposed to during the day. Plus, late night snacking
sends you to bed with a full stomach which can cause you to not be hungry
when you wake up in the morning. Skipping breakfast then lowers your
metabolism and only encourages you to snack throughout the day in order to
compensate. Basically, this cycle never ends and you will not be eating the
5-6 smaller meals you are supposed to until you stop your late night
snacking impulses. Just stop the cycle for one night and get up the next day
and eat those 5-6 meals and you will find that you are not nearly as tempted
to go late night snacking later on.
Pull the Plug on the Television
Actually, that does sound a tad drastic, doesn’t it? Then we would really be
up the creek without a paddle when Desperate Housewives came on, wouldn’t
we? If you simply cannot function without knowing who is cheating on whom
each week in la-la land, then at the very least reduce the amount of time
you spend in front of the television. As mentioned earlier, late night
snacking and television go hand-in-hand and that is definitely why so many
junk food commercials come on late at night. Now if you have an addiction to
doing things while watching television and want to substitute late night
snacking for something more constructive during your favorite show, try
training instead. You will have to concentrate a little harder but training
can be an excellent distraction and a way to beat late night snacking while
watching the “boob tube”.
Stop Buying Junk Food!!!
Frankly, the Total Fitness Plan is in
serious peril if we still have junk food in the house. Late night snacking
ceases to be a concern when you can’t put anything bad into your mouth. Why
risk temptation and the problems with late night snacking and poor diet by
even keeping such things in your house? Eighty-six the snack foods from your
shopping list and end the problems associated with late night snacking. When
you feel the need to splurge and treat yourself, order a pizza instead of
filling up on junk foods all the time.
Low Fat Snacks
I don’t know about the rest of you but I cannot go to sleep if I am hungry.
Thanks to my eating 5-6 small meals a day, I rarely am hungry before heading
off to see the sandman. But, when late night snacking is unavoidable, I
reach for some grapes or something that is good for me instead. That way, I
go to bed feeling satisfied but still wake up the next morning feeling
hungry and ready for breakfast. Although late night snacking is still not
good for me, eating low fat, healthy foods minimizes the damage I do to my
weight loss goals.
Late night snacking really will make your weight loss goals near impossible
to attain so you must get a handle on this problem early on if you are to
succeed in your goals. Remember, late night snacking is a bad habit. Like
any bad habit, late night snacking can be replaced with good habits like
training or some kind of hobby. The beginning is always the hardest but if
you make eliminating late night snacking a priority and replace it with a
more constructive activity, you will be that much closer to attaining your
weight loss goals.
